How to Choose the Best Chandelier for Your Girls Room

Are you redecorating and looking for the perfect chandelier for your girls room? There is more to consider then just the cuteness factor — to choose the perfect chandelier for your space you’ll want to consider the size, shape and type and placement.

With chandeliers coming in so many different sizes and styles you can find the right one for most any space. Don’t feel like you have to stick with a chandelier as the center lighting in your girls room. Consider using a chandelier as a fun light source over a vanity or desk or even inside a walk-in-closet. The size of the chandelier will be determined by where you put it, so first choose the perfect spot for a fancy light fixture in your girls room.

Choosing the Right Size Chandelier for an Open Space

Chandeliers come in a variety of sizes and you want to make sure to choose the right size for your space — not too big and out-of-place or too small and insignificant in the room. The guideline for size is determined by where it will be hung and if you’re using a chandelier to decorate your little girls space then odds are good the light fixture will be placed in the middle of an open room.

If you’re shopping online it can be hard to visualize the size of the chandelier and how it will fill your room so instead you can rely on this simple math to determine what size chandeleir you should be shopping for. When choosing a chandelier for an open space you need to take the width of the room (in feet) and add that to the length of the room (in feet). The answer is the total inches wide that your chandelier should be.

Length of room (ft) + Width of room (ft) = Total width of chandelier in inches

This rule of measurement applies to any open space where you’ll be hanging a chandelier, including a walk-in-closet or bathroom. While this math isn’t exact (you could go a few inches longer or shorter for example), it is a great general guideline to ensure you choose the right size chandelier.

Now that you know what width of chandelier you want to shop for, let’s consider how tall the light fixture should be. A good rule of thumb is that the chandelier should be 2-3 inches per foot. So if your room has a standard 8 foot tall ceiling you want to shop for a 16-24 inch chandelier. Use measuring tape to determine what you feel is a good height for the room in that range — if mom or dad are tall they might not appreciate a low-hanging 24 inch chandelier.

Height of chandelier = 2-3 inches per foot of the height of the room

Hanging a Chandelier over a Bed or Desk

If you’ll be placing the light fixture over a vanity or centered over her bed, you’ll want to consider the size of the lighting in relation to the size of the furniture. If you’ll be putting the lighting directly over the bed then take the width of the bed or desk and subtract 12 inches.

Width of bed – 12 inches = Width of Chandelier hanging over a bed or desk.

If she has a long desk that covers a wall then it might be difficult to find a wide enough light fixture, in that case you could consider hanging two chandeliers above the table.

Height of a Chandelier in a Kids Room

When hanging a light fixture over a desk, keep the height to 30-34 inches from the bottom of the desk. The purpose of the light in this area of the room is to illuminate the work she does at her desk so you need the light to be closer, lighting up the table more than a ceiling light would. Luckily many chandeliers come with chains that make hanging them easily adjustable. Look at your chandelier instructions to see how to lengthen or shorten the height of the light fixture to get just the right height for your nursery or girls room.
